The kids at H.L. Suverkrup Elementary School
raised funds to buy vests for the Yuma
Police K-9 unit.
Principal Kari Neumann got the idea to raise
funds to purchase vests for the K-9 unit, when
she talked to officer Stephanie Malone and K-9 handler.
I think its an amazing and wonderful thing that these students
did for these special officers. The students really got behind
the idea and worked to raise funds to get vests for these dogs.
Most people don’t realize, that these dedicated dogs
go into some very dangerous situations. Protection is
needed so they can continue to help protect and serve
just like their human counterparts.
Neumann said they initially were hoping to collect $1,000 to buy a vest for Malone’s dog, Mitch, but added that they quickly surpassed their initial goal.
“We found some vests that were $700 each so we were able to buy one for Mitch’s buddy, too,” said Neumann.
Malone said she has been Mitch’s handler for about a year and added that she was very grateful for what the students did for her K-9 partner.
