New Law Protects Service Dogs

A service dog putting keys into his owner's hand.

Local Woman is responsible
for getting a new law passed
for service dogs. The House Bill 165
was on the books and it took
fifteen years to finally pass.

Passle Helminski
who has three dogs has been
trying to get this law
into action. Three of her
service dogs were attacked
by other dogs. There was no
law protecting service dogs
from attacks from other dogs.

ErietvNews.com Reports:

Attacks on service dogs are a fairly common problem. When the specially trained dogs are at work, their mind is on the job, not on protecting themselves against attacks from other animals. When service dogs are attacked the resulting physical and psychological issues mean more than one third of them are never able to return to work. Now, those attacks will be punishable under state law.

I’m really glad this passed. It takes
many hours of training for these service
dogs. Its not easy to get a service dog.
For many its a very long process of
paperwork.

Training also takes place with the
handler. These dogs help in so many
ways with everyday tasks. I visited
the center where they train service dogs.

Its amazing to watch how they train them.
These dogs go through hours of training. It
takes patience. Matching the handler with the
dog is a big part of the process. Hopefully
this bill will also pass in other states.
