Introducing your Beagle to your cat

Cats and Dogs can get along. If a
cat hasn’t lived with a dog
before, this will take some
getting use too.

Here are some things you can expect:

According to the ASPCA, your beagle will
react one of three ways.

They may treat the cat like another beagle and start playing. Remember that
puppies are still learning how to play, they can be very energetic, and
sometimes rough. So you need to keep on eye on them. When a cat has had enough
and signals to stop, scratching will happen. This can seriously injure your beagle.

Beagles are hunters, and they may treat the cat like prey. For both
the cat and the dog this spells trouble.

They may become cautious or show avoidance.

The ASPCA offers this advice:

Trim your cat’s claws to keep the interaction as safe as possible for your new dog.

First impressions are important to a cat, so you want the initial meetings to be as stress-free as possible for her. Before you bring your cat and new dog together, prepare for their first introduction by working with your cat to teach her to redirect her attention to you.

Begin by identifying some treats that she likes best. Most cats prefer soft foods heavy with scent, like tuna or small pieces of chicken.
Bring your cat and the treats into the room where you’ll likely do your introductions. Then wait for her to look away from you. When she’s not looking at you, say her name.
